Headshot Preparation Tips

1. Dress and Wardrobe

Dress as you would for an important business meeting or presentation with someone you want to impress. Your clothing should reflect your role and industry while looking polished, confident, and timeless.

General Tips

  • Solid, mid-tone colors photograph best – navy, gray, charcoal, and muted earth tones work well.
  • Avoid busy patterns, stripes, or checks. Subtle textures or light prints are fine if they coordinate with your outfit.
  • Avoid pure white or very light colors unless layered under a dark jacket or cardigan.
  • Choose matte fabrics rather than shiny materials, which can reflect studio lights.
  • Avoid large or distracting jewelry.

For Men

  • Bold ties with solid colors or simple patterns photograph best.
  • Straight-collar shirts are generally more flattering than button-downs.
  • A tailored jacket or blazer adds structure and presence.
  • Shave or trim facial hair neatly the morning of your session.
  • Bring a lint roller and comb for quick touch-ups.

For Women

  • Wear the makeup you normally wear for work – keep it natural and professional.
  • Bring makeup for last-minute touch-ups.
  • Necklines such as scoop, crew, or modest V-necks photograph best.
  • Long or three-quarter sleeves are usually more flattering.
  • Keep jewelry simple and elegant – small earrings or subtle pieces work best.
  • Style your hair as you normally would for work.

2. Grooming & Hair

  • Schedule haircuts or color a few days before your session, not the same day.
  • Avoid heavy gels or shiny products – matte finishes photograph better.
  • Bring a brush, comb, and light styling products for touch-ups.
  • If you have concerns about skin, hair, or other details, discuss them before the session – many issues can be refined during retouching.

3. Glasses and Accessories

  • If you normally wear glasses, you can wear them for your session – just clean the lenses carefully.
  • If you prefer portraits without glasses, discuss this beforehand so adjustments can be made for lighting and posing.
  • Avoid transition lenses, as they may darken under studio lights.

4. Rest and Preparation

  • Get a full night’s sleep and stay hydrated – the camera sees everything.
  • Bring items you may need for quick fixes: powder, lint roller, comb, or compact mirror.
  • Relax and trust the process – you’ll be guided through posing, expression, and lighting so your final image feels natural, confident, and authentic.

5. Before Your Session

Communicate any concerns about appearance, styling, or preferences. The photographer can advise on lighting and explain how subtle retouching can enhance your final images while keeping them true to you.
